POSTCARDS
FROM IRELAND ...Phyllis
...She's my lover: I
send this sketch and message: "I assemble my mountain bike, on Heathrow's
lobby floor, then pedal brazenly out onto the wrong side of the street.
I am completely disoriented in the traffic circles, called roundabouts.
Like the ball in a spinning roulette wheel, I swirl with commuters, jitneys
and lorries into London. Most drivers see me. On this first day of the journey,
I've traveled 7000 miles by air, plus 16 exhilarating miles on the bike.
I miss you terribly."
