IRELAND ..Foxglove . . Sister Carmel's
sabbatical leave ends tomorrow, when she will attend to community needs,
but today she spends with me. While doing household chores, we discuss
notions of religion and life. Though I am not Roman Catholic, or female,
or Irish, we find common ground on almost everything. I am gently touched
by grace. Tomorrow I'll train to Belfast, a center of what Carmen calls
the "Irish Troubles". It is a stalemated war between the terrorist IRA
and the powerful British Army. She believes the British are protecting
excessively wealthy interests in Northern Ireland, which should be unified
with Ireland. I imagine my relatives in Belfast might take a different
view.
